    Passing Tones

We're working on some new arrangements and a discussion came up about the use of passing tones in basslines.

Our Drummer (guitarist) says "no notes outside the key are allowed..it's a rule."

I say wha...?   Many of the walking exercises I remember require chromatic passing tones as a specific technique.

Now I agree that passing tones are just that.......and if they create dissonance within the tune then they should be avoided, but I think it should be depend on the tune or the passage.  Our lead guitarist agrees with me.

Is there a hard and fast rule? Am I missing something?

    Peace,

    Johnny Webb

The hard and fast rule that I go by is easiestly explained by quoting Eddie Van Halen. "If it sounds good, it is good."
